Club fitting or golf lessons: which comes first?
The question we get more than any other. Here’s the honest answer, from a studio that does fitting and not lessons, so there’s nothing to sell you either way.
You’ve got some money set aside to get better at golf. Do you spend it on lessons or a fitting? It’s the most common question we hear, and most answers you’ll find online are written by someone who sells one or the other.
We only do fitting. We don’t offer lessons and never will, so we’ve genuinely no reason to talk you out of a coach. Here’s how we actually answer it when someone asks across the bay.
They fix different things
The mistake is treating this as a versus. It isn’t. They solve two separate problems:
- A coach changes your swing. Path, face, contact, tempo, the things you do to the ball.
- A fitting changes your equipment so it stops fighting the swing you already have. Length, lie, shaft, head, weighting.
Put simply: coaching fixes you, fitting fixes the clubs. If your clubs are wrong, even a perfect swing produces a bad result. If your swing is off, even perfect clubs can’t save it. That’s why the best players do both, and why the order matters.
Which should you do first?
The answer comes down to one thing: how settled your swing is.
If your swing is still changing week to week, get lessons first. Here’s the reason that matters: a fitting measures the swing you have on the day and builds clubs around it. If that swing is going to be different in a month, you’ve fitted to a moving target, and you’ll be paying to do it again. Get the swing repeatable, then fit to it once.
If your swing is fairly repeatable, you can roughly predict your miss, fitting pays off straight away, because now the equipment is the thing most likely holding you back.
Which should you do first?
1. Your swing right now is…
2. What bugs you more?
This is a rule of thumb, not gospel. A 30-minute analysis will tell you far more than any quiz.
What only fitting can fix
Some things a coach simply can’t reach, no matter how good the lesson. These are pure equipment problems:
- Lie angle. If your irons’ lie is a couple of degrees off, the face points left or right at impact and the ball starts offline, on a flawless swing. No amount of coaching corrects a bent lie; a fitter does it in minutes.
- Shaft. A shaft that’s too stiff, too soft or the wrong weight changes your launch, spin and timing. You can’t coach your way around the wrong shaft.
- Set consistency. If every iron feels like a different club, you make a different swing for each. MOI matching makes the whole set feel like one club, that’s a build-bench job, not a range job.
Try to fix these with lessons and you’ll spend months grooving compensations for a problem the club created.
What only lessons can fix
The reverse is just as true. No fitting will fix these, and any fitter who claims otherwise is overselling:
- Swing path and face control. A slice, a hook, a chunk, those come from how you deliver the club. That’s a coach’s job.
- Contact and strike. Catching it thin or fat is a movement pattern. The right club helps it show up cleanly, but it can’t make centre contact for you.
- The fundamentals. Grip, posture, alignment, setup. Cheap to fix with a good coach, impossible to buy your way out of.
If your bad shots come from what you’re doing, see a coach. If they come from what you’re holding, see a fitter. Most golfers have a bit of both, which is why the real answer is usually “both, in the right order.”
The money side
Worth being clear-eyed about cost, because they work differently.
Lessons are ongoing. One lesson rarely rebuilds a swing; you’re buying a series, and the value compounds over months. A fitting is mostly one-time. Once your clubs are right, they stay right, a lie angle doesn’t drift, an MOI-matched set holds. For reference, here’s what fitting costs with us:
| Session | Time | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Swing & equipment analysis | 30 min | SGD 50 |
| Driver / woods fitting | 90 min | SGD 150 |
| Irons fitting (MOI matched) | 90 min | SGD 150 |
A neat starting move if you’re unsure: book the SGD 50 analysis. It reads your swing and your current bag on the launch monitor and tells you honestly whether your problem is the swing or the gear, before you spend on either.
Not sure if it’s you or the clubs? The 30-minute analysis settles it.
Book an analysis- Swing still changing? Lessons first, then fit once it settles.
- Swing repeatable but clubs feel off? Fitting first.
- Fitting fixes: lie, shaft, length, set consistency, things a coach can’t reach.
- Lessons fix: path, face, contact, the fundamentals, things a club can’t.
- Most golfers need both, and a SGD 50 analysis tells you which to start with.
