Every off-the-rack set is built to a static weighting system designed in the 1920s. It approximates feel. It does not match it. So your 4-iron feels heavy in the takeaway, your wedge feels whippy at the top, and the irons in the middle feel like they belong to two different sets.
The reason has a name: moment of inertia.
Traditional swingweight balances a club on a 14-inch fulcrum and reads a D-scale number. That number tells you how the club feels when it’s sitting still. A real swing is not sitting still.
A club is laid horizontally on a swingweight scale with the fulcrum at 14 inches from the grip end. The toe-end drops down; the scale tells you by how much, in “swingweight points” (C8, D0, D2, D4). It’s a static balance reading, the same kind a school physics class might run.
For a hundred years it’s been the only number a club-builder had to work with. So a “matched” off-the-rack set means every iron measures the same D-point on the scale, D2, say, and the fitter shrugs and ships the set.
Two clubs with the same D-point can require very different effort to swing. The 4-iron is longer than the 9-iron. Its mass is distributed differently along the shaft. The same static balance produces a heavier dynamic feel in the longer club, which is exactly why your 4-iron feels nothing like your 9-iron, even though both irons claim to be “D2 swingweight.”
For most off-the-rack players, the difference adds up to a different tempo per club. Different timing. Different miss patterns. A set that needs a separate swing for every iron.

MOI, moment of inertia, measures a club’s resistance to rotation around the grip. It’s a dynamic measurement, not a static one. It captures how the club feels in motion, which is the only thing that matters when you’re actually swinging it.
Imagine swinging an axe versus a fishing rod. Both might weigh the same on a kitchen scale. The axe is heavy in the head, takes effort to start, takes effort to stop. The rod is light at the tip, easy to swing, easy to whip. Same weight, very different feel.
MOI is how we put a number on that difference. A higher MOI = more effort to rotate the club around the grip. A lower MOI = less effort. Two clubs at the same MOI require the same effort to swing, even if their static swingweights look different.
When every iron in your set is matched to the same MOI – say, 2,720 g·cm² – every iron requires the exact same effort to swing. The 4-iron stops feeling heavy. The 9-iron stops feeling whippy. The wedge stops feeling like a separate club. They all feel like the iron you’re best with.
What you do with that is groove a single swing. One tempo, one timing, one feel, fourteen clubs. The compensations drop out. The dispersion tightens. The set stops fighting you.
Effort required to swing each club in the set. The shorter the bar, the lighter the effort. Matched is what you want.
The set ships “matched” on a static scale, but every club requires a slightly different effort to swing. You compensate, club by club. Some are friends. Some are strangers.
Once each club is tuned to the same MOI value, every iron in the bag feels like the same swing. Groove one tempo. Use it for all fourteen. No more “favourite” iron because there’s no longer a stranger one.
The MOI of a club isn’t something you can eyeball or read off a packaging sticker. It needs a specialised electronic scale. Most retail fitters don’t carry one. We do.

Once we know your target MOI, usually set by the iron you’re best with, we tune each remaining iron to match. The tools are simple: lead tape under the grip cap, tip weights inside the shaft, the occasional hosel adjustment. Each change is re-measured on the scale until the iron lands inside ±25 g·cm² of the target.
Tolerances tighter than that go past what a human can feel. Tolerances looser than that leave the “favourite club” problem in. We aim for the sweet spot.
The instinct to slow down for long irons and quicken up for short irons goes away. You don’t think about tempo because tempo stops being a variable. The same backswing length, the same transition, the same finish, off every iron in the bag.
When effort drops out, focus moves to contact. Mid-handicappers commonly add 2–3 strokes a round just from cleaner ball-striking inside a matched set, not because their swing changed, but because the equipment stopped asking them to change it club to club.
The compensations you didn’t know you were making, the early release with the long irons, the held-off finish with the wedges, drop out automatically once they stop being needed. The dispersion oval shrinks. The fade stays a fade. The draw stays a draw.
