Two wedges that go the same distance is one wedge too many. A four-iron and a hybrid that both fly 175m means you’re carrying a dead slot. Gapping finds those overlaps and the gaps in between, then closes them with loft adjustments, shaft pulls, or a club swap.
You think your 7-iron flies 150m because that’s what it said on the rangefinder one time. Real ball-strike data tells a different story: maybe it’s 143, maybe it’s 148 on a good day, and maybe your 8-iron is closer than you think.
Three things, usually. (1) Two clubs covering the same window, one of them dead weight. (2) A 20+ metre gap between two clubs where there should be a 10–15m gap. (3) A wedge progression that’s lofted wrong from the factory and leaves you with no shot from 80–90m.
Lofts bent on the Mitchell machine to open or close a gap. Shafts pulled and replaced where a softer or stiffer shaft moves the carry number. Occasionally we’ll recommend a club swap – a 5-wood instead of a 4-hybrid, a 50° gap wedge to bridge from PW to SW. We propose; you decide.
