A 1-degree error in lie angle moves the ball 4 metres left or right at 150m carry. The factory ships every iron at the same lie, regardless of who you are. That’s the single largest source of “why does the ball keep leaking right?” And it’s the cheapest thing on the menu to fix.
Lie is the angle between the shaft and the ground at address. Loft is the angle of the face at address. Both can be bent on a Mitchell machine in two minutes. Both are the highest-leverage adjustments you can make to a forged iron without changing the iron.
A lie board with shoe polish on the sole tells us where the club is actually striking at impact – toe-down, heel-down, or square. We cross-check with the launch monitor’s dynamic lie reading. Together, they tell us how many degrees to bend in either direction.
Most off-the-rack players are 1–3 degrees off the factory standard. A few are 4+ degrees off. The difference at 150m carry is 4 metres per degree.
Loft adjustments are about gapping – pulling a 7-iron stronger to open up the gap to the 8, or weakening a sand wedge to bridge to the gap wedge. We don’t bend loft for its own sake; we bend it to close a specific gap that the launch monitor is showing.
Lofted-up clubs hold spin. Strong-lofted clubs run hotter. Both have a place. The data decides.
